Research and Education Opportunities at The Ohio State University

Ecosystems for Waste treatment
click to see more pictures of 2002 class Research is being conducted on two aquatic ecosystems for waste treatment.  The one pictured here is used for a hands-on design class instructed by Dr. Jay Martin.  A larger but similar research facility is being constructed on OSU's Waterman Farm.  These waste treatment ecosystems are based on the work by John Todd and Living Machines, Inc.

Olentangy River Wetland Research Park
Olentangy River Wetlands The Olentangy River Wetland  Research Park is a world-class wetland research and education facility.  Construction is just being finished for the on-site laboratory and classroom space.  Located on the Olentangy river just north of the main OSU campus, the park also offers self-guided tours and an observation deck for the public.

Waterman Farm Agricultural Research
Waterman farm wetland The Waterman Farm agricultural research facility provides research opportunities for students and faculty in agriculture, ecology, and engineering.  Ecological engineering students are conducting research at two locations on the farm.  Research takes place on a series of wetland mesocosms at the farm.  Research is also conducted on two storm water treatment wetlands wetland cells (0.25ha and 0.5ha) with high-frequency water quality monitoring equipment

River Restoration and Dam Removal Studies
The River restoration and dam removal studies have focused mainly on an ongoing dam removal project on the Sandusky River, Ohio.  The group led by Dr. Tim C. Granata has focused on how the river has recovered following the removal of the Saint John Dam.  Studies have focused on geomorphology, sediment transport, nutrient concentrations, and habitat suitability of target fish and macroinvertebrate species.

Recommended courses for Ecological Engineering Program

***COURSE LIST FOR SPECIALIZATION IN ECOLOGICAL ENGINEERING IN THE CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT AVAILABLE***

***Special Note:  The list of classes in not set in stone.  Although there are some core requirement for the specialization, there is a lot of self design involved in your future.  Please take these courses as good suggestions.  Some classes will not fit you while they will fit others.  Most advisors will allow you to pick classes not listed that will meet the requirements for the specialization.**************

Template for an OSU style thesis

This template not only has some of the formatting done for you, but it shows you how to make a dynamically formatted thesis.  You will be able to utilize MSWord's tools for creating a table of contents and other numbered references (figures, tables, equations) that order and update themselves.   Share this with others if you find it helpful!  There's no need for every graduate student to go through the headache of figuring out all the OSU formatting tricks.  Click here to open or download the template.  Try this before you start writing and formatting your thesis, it just might save you time.
